THIS UPCOMING SUNDAY
Here We Stand: Grace Alone and Faith Alone
Last Sunday we were reminded of the great truths of justification (being made right before God) by grace alone through faith alone. This is considered the central doctrine of the Christian faith–the matter of how to be made right with God is more important than any other idea or truth. While the old covenant between God and mankind concerned itself with all the requirements that need to be met in order to be justified before God, the new covenant initiated with Jesus’ blood freely gives that justification to all who believe in Jesus. I hope it was powerful to conclude the sermon with so many passages of Scripture that celebrate this profound truth!
This upcoming Sunday, our focus will be “Solus Christus,” or Christ Only. This “sola” of the Reformation, among other things, reminds us that we need no mediator between mankind and God other than Jesus. The Roman Catholic Church teaches that priests, saints, and even Mary are additional important mediators for Christians. As Protestants, we reject these teachings, as they are not found in Scripture and go against what Scripture teaches. Ken Hathcoat will be preaching this Sunday, and he will remind us that Jesus alone stands as mankind’s great mediator.
Maybe you wonder, “Why does Ginger always ask us to stand and worship?” (By the way, if you are one who is not able to stand, you can do what I suggest to the NoCo Praise Choir: to “sit standing”.)
There are many reasons we stand to worship the Lord. To name a few: standing is an active way we express our praise; it helps keep us from lethargy in our worship; and in the original temple design, the Lord never instructed chairs to be installed in the sanctuary. In heaven there is only one throne and 24 chairs for the elders; and according to Revelation 4:10-11, the elders are rarely sitting in them.
This past month I read a great quote in the Worship Leader magazine when Rory Noland wrote about standing during worship. Referencing Isaiah 6:1-3, he said, “Seated on a throne, God is the only One who sits during worship.” O, Praise the Lord, for He alone is worthy!
“…I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple. Above it stood seraphim…And one cried to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory.” (Isaiah 6:1-3)
